What does Mission: St. Louis do?

Mission: St. Louis is a non-profit organization seeking to transform the city of St. Louis by meeting the needs of - and restoring dignity to - people living in at-risk communities. Mission: St. Louis rightfully engages community members as experts in their communities by addressing needs raised by community members in everyday conversations. Programs are designed with an understanding that conversations cannot and will not occur without first intentionally building relationships between residents and staff.

Do I have to make a commitment to serve on an ongoing basis?

It depends. Our Community Loop work days are open to new volunteers and ongoing volunteers. These are one-day events that involve doing home repair. Our special events are also a great way to volunteer for one day and not have an ongoing commitment. For most of our other programs, such as our education programs or community programs, we do ask that you commit to serving on a continual basis.

Do you have any way families can serve/can my kids serve with me?

Families can serve primarily through our Community Loop or Summer Sports Camp programs. We require that, if you are bringing your child/children to a service activity, you please attend to your children. There is potential to bring your children to other service activities, but we ask that you first contact a leader to find out if a specific program is appropriate for children.

Do I need a teaching background to be an education volunteer?

You do not need a specific background in order to volunteer with any of our programs. Our education volunteers have a variety of experiences. People with teaching backgrounds and people who have spent time in inner-city schools are more than welcome to volunteer with us, but you certainly do not need that sort of background to be a valued member of our education team.
