An Hour Here, An Hour There

One thing that I really enjoy doing is working with children. I love knowing that by giving my time, I am helping. Whether it is playing a game with them, reading with them, or even just helping them understand the directions in the classroom, I feel like my presence can help make a difference. One thing I have really enjoyed about my time at Mission: St Louis so far is the opportunity to volunteer in the St. Louis Public Schools. It's a great opportunity to participate in Mission: St Louis's Morning Reading Program as well as its Adopt-A-Classroom program. I get a chance to experience two different environments of working with the kids at Adams Elementary. During the Morning Reading Program, I help a group of students with reading and comprehension. By working with the same kids each week, I feel like I can build a relationship and really have an impact on their learning experience. With Adopt-A-Classroom, I really get to interact with a whole classroom. I assist the teacher in any way that I can. Sometimes this means I'm providing instructions for a project, sometimes I'm working one-on-one with students, and often, I'm available to help answer students' questions. The time I spend in both these programs are very enjoyable and valuable and only serve to remind me why I love the work we do here!
