Want to volunteer this Christmas? How about all year?

Let me start by introducing myself. I am one of the newest AmeriCorps VISTA members to join Mission: St. Louis. I'm the Volunteer Coordinator, to be exact. I picked up my comfortable life in Kansas to move to the whole new world of St. Louis.

During my first week here, I panicked. I was totally out of my element and began to ask myself "What am I doing?!" But wallowing in self-pity for longer than an hour is not my thing, so I pushed on. Surely this fear would pass. And, it did! I received instant support from everyone at Mission: St. Louis, as well as others, and began to feel at ease. I still have much to learn, but I am constantly reminded of why I chose to do this.

Volunteering has been a meaningful part of my life. It isn't always easy. Sometimes it is shocking, sometimes emotional, and sometimes frustrating, but in the end it is always more than worth it. Through volunteering, I have learned so many lessons about myself and the world around me. It has helped shape many of my views today and is one of the main reasons I chose to commit to a second year as a full-time AmeriCorps volunteer.

My challenge to you and hope for the next year is this: Get a little uncomfortable. I challenge you to not let the eagerness to give and serve fade after the excitement of Christmas has passed. Our neighborhood needs are not seasonal. They occur year-round, in areas of education, economic development, and empowerment. I challenge you to step outside of your element and allow yourself to be stretched. You might have a "What am I doing?!" moment, but soon after, you will find comfort and satisfaction in more ways than you could have ever expected, while learning a little about yourself along the way.

Fill out our volunteer form and get connected today. I look forward to seeing you at one of our programs!
