Every year in December, Mission: St. Louis hosts Affordable Christmas events at several locations around the city. This event empowers low-income families to provide a fun Christmas for their children.
In years past, people have donated thousands of toys in an effort to provide hundreds of children with presents for the holiday. Nearly a thousand volunteers have donated their time to seamlessly carry out the events. The families invited to Affordable Christmas have traditionally been families with whom we have a relationship through our other programs and live in the zip codes 63110, 63112, 63118, and 63139. Other families are invited based on available space.
Every fall, we collect brand new toys and cash donations (used to purchase gifts) which we then price at ~1/10 of the original retail value. Parents and guardians who would like to participate are highly encouraged to RSVP. They then show up at a specified time and place to go Christmas shopping!
Host a toy drive: One of the easiest and most effective ways you can help is to host a toy drive. Whether it's with your church, your place of employment, or simply your family and friends, you can make a huge difference in a child's Christmas by gathering toys for Affordable Christmas.
Volunteer at an event: We need volunteers for our Affordable Christmas events and we'd love for you to come out and join us. As a volunteer, you could provide childcare, wrap gifts, register families, or even be a personal shopper - the opportunities are endless. The easiest way to volunteer is to sign up with your community group, but single volunteers are welcomed as well. Fill out our volunteer form here!
