BEYOND SCHOOL

Beyond School is after-school relational enrichment program for students in St. Louis schools who are potentially behind in reading or other key skills. It focuses on their academic success as well as preparing them to thrive in all facets of life.

MENTOR // As an Academic Mentor, you would be helping students with literacy, academic & organizational skills, and building meaningful relationships with them.

ENRICHMENT CLASS TEACHER // Enrichment classes are Tuesdays or Thursdays every week, for an 8-week cycle. Come teach students a special skill or subject you’re good at and are willing to teach to students!

  • SCP has enrichment classes from 5:30-6:30pm.

  • Both St. Louis Language Immersion School sites have enrichment classes from 4:30-5:30pm.

BEYOND JOBS

MENTOR // Mentors support and encourage their students throughout the program. Mentors work one-on-one with their student to help them set and achieve personal goals, and reinforce job-training and small group lessons. Commitment: 1 hour a week for a full 8-week program. Times are flexible and can be decided between the volunteer and student.

JOB COACH // Job Coaches work with a group of students on specific roadblocks that can prevent them from becoming successful in the workplace, as well as helping track students’ success in the program. Commitment: every Monday evening for a full 8-week JLT session.

SMALL GROUP LEADER // Volunteers facilitate small group student discussions at Biblical Manhood Class, training and empowering the men as they work to become more spiritually sound. Using the Gospel, they guide students with counseling and character-building exercises. Commitment: every Thursday evening for a full 8-week JLT session.

MEAL PREP // JLT meals offer a time for community-building. Volunteers may cook a meal, freeze a meal, purchase food from a local restaurant or provide money for the cost of a meal. Monday evenings, we extend the invite to volunteers to stick around for dinner. Commitment: one Monday or Thursday evening or Wednesday morning (at minimum - welcome to do more than one!)

CLASSROOM ASSISTANTS FOR SKILLUP // Classroom assistants help facilitate programming and assist the Case Manager with anything that will help class run smoothly.  Commitment: 1 class per week for 3 weeks, dates & times TBD

BEYOND CHARITY

AMP + HOME REPAIR // Mission: St. Louis offers a variety of home repair volunteer opportunities, catering to both local and out of town guests. Contact Kale to discuss options or visit ampstl.org to learn more. Commitment: from one week to one day, up to the specific group volunteering.

MORNING READING PROGRAM // An opportunity to read with students at Adams Elementary School (near the Grove). The main goal is to provide consistent, friendly faces to students. Arrival is 7:30-7:40am, and you'll finish by 8:15am. Kara Vaninger, a longtime volunteer, leads out the program. Commitment: weekly for a significant amount of time.

VITA TAX PREP // The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $60,000 or less, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. This important service protects people from fraud and/or exorbitant filing fees and gets refunds/returns processed accurately and timely. No tax experience is necessary, just a willingness to work with individuals and enter data using a program designed to guide volunteers through the entire process. All volunteers receive detailed training and work in a collaborative setting with experienced tax preparers and reviewers. One training in January, 5 Saturday dates of operation in Feb and March (every other Sat) At SCP, 1224 Grattan St, St. Louis, MO 63104.
