As a Community Intervention Specialist, you will be responsible for:

• Neighborhood Outreach

• Build relationships with key individuals in the target area, learning about the causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation.

• Form relationships with the highest risk people in the community, as well as the people who know them, and engage with them on a regular basis, assessing readiness for case management.

• Hold events that will engage individuals most at risk.

• Case Management

• Maintain a caseload of people who are at highest risk for violent activity.

• Maintain frequent communication with participants on your caseload and assist them as they navigate each day.

• Formulate Action Plans (risk reduction plans) to prevent and resolve conflicts.

• Refer individuals interested in Beyond Jobs through the established process.

• Incident Intervention

• Talk to residents in the target area about potential conflicts and assist in preventing them.

• When possible, intervene in circumstances in which gun violence is likely, including possible retaliation.

• Work with community partners to identify and diffuse “hot spots” for gun violence.

• Organize peace-promoting, healing responses when shootings/killings take place.

Minimum Qualifications 

• High school diploma or GED required. 

• Relevant lived experience and demonstrated community credibility strongly preferred. 

• Experience in violence prevention, outreach, mentoring, reentry, behavioral health, youth development, community organizing, public safety, or related human services preferred. 

• Valid driver’s license preferred. 

Physical Requirements

• Lift and carry up to 35 pounds of outreach materials, tables, tents, chairs, and event supplies.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

• Facilitates a standardized intake process, utilizing a trauma-informed approach 

• Maintains consistent communication with participants 

• Provides individualized support to participants impacted by crime directly/indirectly 

DATA MANAGEMENT

• Collects and maintains community resource information to share with stakeholders 

• Maintains accurate case records and grant reports for each participant  

• Performs administrative duties to track and document participants progress/referrals 

COMMUNITY ENGAGMENT

• Engages the local community to identify specific needs and to enhance working relationships with residents, businesses, and faith-based/community groups 

• Fosters collaboration among crime victim support service agencies 

• Interfaces with current/potential supporters to recruit volunteers  

• Provides advocacy and organizes educational programming to community members and partnering agencies about abuse, victim rights, laws, violence, and available resources for mental health/trauma services 

• Supports Peace on Wheels Mobil counseling RV when in the community.  

The above list is not exhaustive; there will be times where you will be asked to help participate and potentially lead other projects on an ad hoc basis. This can include areas outside of your immediate area of responsibility. These projects can come for your direct supervisor or other parts of the leadership team. The Community Resource Specialist is also expected to be an active team player by participating in all company-wide mandatory events, including fundraising and other organization-building activities. 

This is a full-time, hourly, exempt position requiring no less than 40 hours a week and reports to the Engagement Manager. This is an at-will position and the terms may be altered or canceled at any time by either party.

SCHEDULE 

The weekly schedule for this position is flexible and averages 40 hours a week. You can expect a schedule of Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 PM- 8:00pm . 

Clinical Services 

• Provide trauma-informed individual counseling to community members impacted by gun violence. 

• Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and trauma assessments. 

• Complete behavioral health screenings and clinical evaluations.

Peace on Wheels Mobile Operations 

• Deliver clinical services from the Peace on Wheels mobile counseling unit. 

• Travel to scheduled neighborhood locations throughout the City of St. Louis. 

• Provide counseling services within the mobile office while maintaining client confidentiality. 

• Participate in neighborhood outreach efforts alongside the Peace on Wheels team. 

• Assist in creating a welcoming, safe, and trauma-informed environment for community members.

Community Response 

Respond as part of the Peace on Wheels community response following incidents of gun violence by: 

• Providing immediate psychological first aid.

• Connecting individuals to ongoing behavioral health services. 

• Supporting community healing efforts in collaboration with outreach staff.

Minimum Qualifications 

• Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, or related behavioral health field. 

• Active Missouri clinical license required (LMSW, LCSW, LPC, PLPC, LMFT, PLMFT, or equivalent; independent licensure preferred). 

• Minimum two years of clinical experience providing behavioral health services. 

• Experience working with trauma, grief, violence, crisis intervention, or community behavioral health preferred.

Typical responsibilities include: 

• 12:00–1:00 p.m.: Team briefing, case review, preparation, and travel to site. 

• 1:00–2:00 p.m.: Mobile unit setup, outreach, community engagement, and intake preparation. 

• 2:00–6:15 p.m.: Scheduled counseling sessions, assessments, crisis intervention, and walk-in services. 

• After 6:15 p.m.: No new counseling sessions begin. New individuals receive intake, education, referrals, and placement on the scheduling list for the next available appointment. 

• 7:00–8:00 p.m.: Documentation, case coordination, cleanup, and team debrief. 

• Participate in Beyond School Team meetings and Professional Development/Service Trainings to develop and implement a high-quality program

• Service hours include: Beyond School Program time 3:00-6:15, Monday-Friday; hours outside of direct service program times performed in-office and used for planning, admin, transportation and meetings, requiring ~15-18 hrs/wk until early July; flexibly 2:30 p.m.-6:45 p.m. MondayFriday (may serve 3-5 days/week, but must serve ~15-18 hours total/week)
